  • A psychologist has highlighted the case of a 38-year-old man who can only remember the last 90 minutes of his life.

According to Dr Gerald Burgess of the University of Leicester in the UK, this unique case has left scientists baffled and is ‘like nothing we have ever seen before'.

"One of our reasons for writing up this individual's case was that we had never seen anything like this before in our assessment clinics, and we do not know what to make of it. We had never seen anything like it before," Dr Burgess explained.

The otherwise fit and healthy man suffered memory loss after receiving a local anaesthetic at his dental surgery prior to root canal treatment a decade ago. Now, he can only remember things that have happened in the last 90 minutes, and he wakes up every day thinking it is the same day that he went to the dentist.

Dr Burgess said that the man's symptoms are similar to that seen in movies such as Groundhog Day or Memento. His personality has not changed and he is fully aware of his identity, however he cannot remember anything beyond 90 minutes.

He manages his life using an electronic diary and access to prompts.

Dr Burgess said that at this point, he does not think the anaesthetic or root canal procedure are to blame for the man's condition.

"It would be unethical and perhaps baseless scaremongering to do so, there is not sufficient evidence. I feel the story lies elsewhere, but that the preceding incident needed to be documented and not ignored," he commented.

He added that there is ‘nothing more than that to go on now' and he is calling on anyone with similar stories or theories to come forward.

The case of the man was highlighted in the journal, Neurocase.
