  • With the Junior and Leaving Cert exams just days away, pharmacists have reported a surge in parents who are seeking advice about exam stress in their teenage children.

According to the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU), exam stress can lead to a number of health problems, including upset stomachs, diarrhoea, tension headaches and cold sores.

Stress can also aggravate certain conditions, such as asthma and sinusitis.

"The problems parents are talking to us about are quite varied in nature and quite different in the level of severity of symptoms ranging from regular tension headaches, stomach problems, interruption in sleep patterns to more severe anxiety.

"It is hard to avoid stress altogether but if any student or their parent is worried or wants some advice as to how to manage a stress-related minor ailment during exam time, they can talk to their pharmacist," explained pharmacist and IPU member, Bernard Duggan.

Pharmacists are offering the following advice to stressed students:
-Eat well-balanced, healthy meals regularly. Try to avoid spicy food and junk food
-Make sure you get enough sleep and try to avoid products containing caffeine. Do not study in bed as the brain will become over-stimulated.
-If you are suffering with headaches, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Study in a room that is well ventilated and take regular breaks
-If you have eczema, keep your skin well moisturised with lotions specifically made for this condition
-If you have asthma, ensure you have your inhaler with you at all times, especially during exams
-If you suffer from hay fever, keeps windows and doors closed while studying and avoid going outside when the pollen count is at its highest. If you need to take antihistamines, make sure they are non-drowsy.

Meanwhile, Mr Duggan also recommended that students take some time out to relax during the exam period.

"It is ok to have some fun with family and friends. This will also help keep stress levels down," he said.

The State exams begin on Wednesday, June 3.
