  • Men who drink alcohol more than twice a week may be at an increased risk of dying from a stroke, the results of a new study indicate.

It is already well-established that too much alcohol can increase the risk of a number of conditions, including stroke. However, according to these findings, it is not just the amount of alcohol that matters, but the frequency of consumption.

The Finnish study involved over 2,600 middle-aged men who were monitored over a 20-year period.

It found that those who consumed alcohol more than two times per week were at least three times more likely to die from a stroke than a person who consumed alcohol less frequently.

This risk of stroke mortality was increased irrespective of the amount of alcohol consumed.

Details of these findings are published in the Scandinavian medical journal, Acta Neurologica Scandinavica.
