  • A new resource which aims to support healthcare staff to learn more about infection control and antimicrobial stewardship has been launched by the HSE.

The series of accredited e-learning modules were developed by the HSE’s antimicrobial and infection control team (AMRIC) and are targeted at staff working in all healthcare settings.

There are 14 modules with each taking between 20 and 40 minutes to complete. Assessments are included as are ‘extend my learning pieces’ for staff who want to undertake further learning or who want practical activities to help transfer the learning into their local area of work.

“Every year we see people who are affected by infections associated with healthcare settings. These infections can lead to significant mortality, psychological and financial losses for people, their families and the health and social care systems.

“Healthcare associated infections are the most frequent adverse event in healthcare delivery worldwide and are one of the leading causes of the global disease burden. We want to share this accredited, free online resource with all healthcare services across Ireland to support improved knowledge and change,” commented AMRIC director of nursing, Josephine Galway.

    Modules in the programme include:

    -Hand hygiene

    -Personal protective equiptment (PPE)

    -Aseptic technique

-Prevention and management of urinary tract infection

    -Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis

-Management of blood and body fluid spills.

Each AMRIC module has been accredited by the National Midwifery and Nursing Board Ireland (1 CPD per module) and the Royal College of Physicians Ireland (2 CPDs per module). Healthcare workers can dip in and out of the courses at any time.

Access to the modules is free, however participants need to register here.
