  • Eleven more deaths from COVID-19 have been reported, as well as 390 new cases of the virus.

Of the 11 deaths, four occurred in April, two in March, four in February and one in January. This brings the total number of deaths in the Republic to 4,847.

Of the 403 new cases, 172 occurred in Dublin, 42 in Kildare, 21 in Meath, 20 in Tipperary and 18 in Donegal. The total number of cases now stands at 244,297.

As of 8am on Tuesday, there were 179 people with COVID-19 in hospital, 48 of whom were in ICU. There had been 18 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

As of April 18, over 1.2 million doses of the vaccine had been administered. Almost 353,000 people have received both of their two doses.

Earlier, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced that its safety committee had concluded that the benefits of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine outweigh the risks. However, it also said that a warning about unusual blood clots should be added to the vaccine's product information, listing these events as very rare side-effects.

As of April 13, 2021, over seven million people had received this vaccine in the US.

"In reaching its conclusion, the committee took into consideration all currently available evidence, including eight reports from the US of serious cases of unusual blood clots associated with low levels of blood platelets, one of which had a fatal outcome.

"All cases occurred in people under 60 years of age within three weeks after vaccination, the majority in women. Based on the currently available evidence, specific risk factors have not been confirmed," the EMA said.

The committee found that the clots occurred mostly at unusual sites, such as veins in the brain and abdomen. The cases reviewed were "very similar" to the cases that occurred with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The National Immunisation Advisory Committee will now assess the EMA's findings, before making a recommendation on how Ireland's vaccine rollout should proceed.
