  • People with asthma and hay fever who are planning to attend various festivals and outdoor events over the coming days are being reminded of the importance of being aware of the condition's triggers.

Thousands of people are expected to attend outdoor events over the long weekend, however, common triggers, such as passive smoke and pollen, can exacerbate these conditions.

"The June bank holiday weekend can be a dangerous time for asthma and hay fever sufferers. A high pollen count, coupled with the additional triggers at festivals such as secondhand smoke, alcohol, dry ice, and mould from tents, can all affect respiratory conditions," said Frances Guiney, an asthma nurse specialist with the Asthma Society.

She pointed out that many people with asthma forget to bring their inhalers to events over the weekend, ‘ and in the midst of festivities, can often let symptoms worsen rather than dealing with the condition when it strikes'.

The Asthma Society called on people to ensure they have a proper plan in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

"We are urging sufferers to remember their asthma medication and bring a back-up inhaler just in case. It is also important to let your friends know about your condition, and identify where the nearest medical tent is located in case of an emergency," commented Asthma Society CEO, Sharon Cosgrave.

The society offers the following advice to people with asthma:
-Do not forget to bring your inhaler
-Know where the medical tents are
-Let your friends know that you have asthma
-If using a tent, get someone else to put it up
-If drinking alcohol, do so in moderation
    -Do not smoke
    -Do not take recreational drugs

Asthma affects around 470,000 people in Ireland. For more information on the condition, see our Asthma Clinic, in association with the Asthma Society, here
