  • Eight well known Irish personalities who climbed Africa's tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, in aid of Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin, are to be featured in a documentary tonight.

‘The Climb for Kids', which is narrated by Dublin actor Colin Farrell, follows the journey of Kathryn Thomas, Alan Shortt, Sile Seoige, Karl Spain, Jenny Buckley, Ruth Scott, Darren Holden and Paul Byrne.

At 19,340 feet above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world. Altitude sickness and subzero temperatures are just some of the challenges that climbers of the mountain face.

Altogether, 28 climbers took part in this expedition.

Commenting on the climb, Alan Shortt described it as the ‘toughest experience' of his life, while Sile Seoige also said it was the ‘toughest thing' she had ever done, but was also a ‘life enhancing experience'.

According to Joe Quinsey, CEO of the Children's Medical & Research Foundation at Our Lady's Children's Hospital, the hospital was ‘overwhelmed by the 28 climbers who generously gave their time to this project'.

"Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a huge challenge that in some way may reflects the challenges that many of the children who come to Crumlin face. The money raised through this Climb for Kids project will make a huge difference to the lives of children in our hospital. We can't thank everyone enough," he said.

The documentary will be shown tonight (July 18) on RTE 1 at 9.30pm.
