  • Health Minister James Reilly has been urged to clarify the health implications and legal status of electronic cigarettes.

Government Chief Whip and Minister of State Paul Kehoe pointed out that the World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concerns about the health implications of electronic cigarettes and other electronic nicotine delivery systems.

He said the WHO had concluded that until these devices are deemed safe, consumers should be strongly advised not to use these products.

Mr Kehoe said he had contacted Minister Reilly and the Chief Medical officer, Dr Tony Holohan, and they told him that these products were currently being reviewed.

He claimed the manufacturers of these devices were using the current uncertainty to attract customers before the health implications are fully understood and the products regulated.

Mr Kehoe said there should be strong regulation of these devices.
