  • The Central Remedial Clinic (CRC) in Dublin has said that it has not been made aware of any allegations or incidents of inappropriate behaviour by the disgraced TV personality, Jimmy Savile, while he fundraised for the clinic in Ireland.

Mr Savile, a DJ and TV presenter with the BBC, took part in a number of fundraising events on behalf of the CRC and was a popular visitor to these shores, with his appearances attracting audiences of thousands of young people.

However, following his death in 2011, reports of sexual abuse began to emerge and it is now known that he was a prolific sexual deviant, targeting boys, girls, men and women of all ages.

On Thursday, the NHS released 28 separate reports on hospitals in which Mr Savile had unrestricted access. These revealed that his victims ranged in age from five to 75. The offences ranged from lewd remarks to rape and it was also alleged that he may have performed sex acts on dead bodies in hospital mortuaries.

The CRC said it was ‘appalled' by the findings of the NHS reports, but added that it was not aware of any allegations involving victims in Ireland.

"To the best of our knowledge, at no time has the CRC ever been made aware of any allegations or any incidents involving inappropriate or criminal behavior concerning Jimmy Savile, neither during, nor after, his involvement with the CRC," said CRC chief executive, Stephanie Manahan.

She urged anyone with suspicions, allegations, complaints or knowledge of any incidents to contact the relevant authorities or the CRC directly.

"As a national centre for children and adults with physical disabilities, the safety and wellbeing of our clients is paramount," she added.

Also commenting on the scandal, CARI, which provides therapy to children in Ireland who have been affected by sexual abuse, described the contents of the reports as ‘truly shocking'.

However, according to CARI chief executive, Mary Flaherty, while Mr Savile's activities were at the ‘extreme end of the scale of offending in terms of number of offences, he shares the same features as most sexual offenders'.

"Namely, he is a pillar of the community or family, charming, persuasive but with a ruthless streak and never, ever admits guilt. Victims are often not believed, young, disabled and whole families and institutions are groomed to silence. It is also a little-known fact that a single offender will abuse multiple victims - sometimes across generations," she noted.
