  • People are being reminded of the dangers of drinking alcohol while taking certain medicines.

According to the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU), mixing alcohol with certain medications can be ‘extremely dangerous'. It is calling on people to think twice about this over the Christmas period.

"Alcohol can interact negatively with many over-the-counter and herbal remedies, as well as prescription medicines. In some cases, the result could be tiredness, light headedness or affected concentration levels.

"In other cases, the reactions can be much more severe. For instance, it can lead to trouble concentrating, performing mechanical skills and driving - posing an even greater risk," explained Bernard Duggan of the IPU.

He pointed out that mixing alcohol and medication can lead to falls and other serious injuries, especially among people who may be taking a number of different medicines.

He also highlighted the fact that mixing alcohol with medications may make those medications less effective.

Mr Duggan called on people who are on any kind of medication to consult with their pharmacist before drinking alcohol ‘to avoid putting their personal safety and the safety of others at risk'.
