People attending festivals this summer are being reminded to look after their health.

According to the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU), unprotected sex, dehydration and diarrhoea are the top three threats to festival goers' health. It is urging people to be particularly cautious when it comes to unprotected sex.

"We are warning people to be prepared if they believe there is any chance of an unplanned sexual encounter. Condoms are essential to protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It is also important to note that oral contraception (i.e. the pill) can become ineffective if the person is suffering from vomiting or diarrhoea, potentially leading to an unwanted pregnancy," commented IPU treasurer, Bernard Duggan.

When it comes to general health, Mr Duggan said that a few ‘festival essentials' can make a big difference.

"A few small items can help if you do become unwell, such as medication for stomach upsets or diarrhoea and antiseptic cream for bites, stings or cuts. If you are suffering from diarrhoea, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. It is also important to have sunscreen of SPF 20 or higher with adequate UVA protection," he noted.

The IPU suggests that festival goers bring the following items with them:
-Water to prevent dehydration
-Prescription medicines, e.g. an inhaler if you have asthma or insulin if you have diabetes
-Antiseptic hand gel with a high alcohol content
-Condoms
-Sunscreen of at least 20 SPF
-Plasters
-Toilet paper/tissues
An over-the counter medicine for stomach upsets and diarrhoea
-Antiseptic cream for cuts, stings or bites.

"Music festivals are there to be enjoyed. It is important, therefore, that individuals take all precautions to ensure that they have a safe, healthy and enjoyable festival experience," Mr Duggan added.
