  • People with sleep problems in Galway are being invited to have their blood pressure checked for free this week as part of ongoing research into reducing the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Recent research indicates that poor sleep can increase the risk of high blood pressure and obesity, both of which are major risk factors for stroke and heart attacks.

While it is widely acknowledged that getting enough sleep is essential for good health, an increasing number of people are reporting poor sleeping patterns as a result of the pressures of modern life.

Researchers at the HRB Clinical Research Facility at NUI Galway are looking at whether sleep deficits are linked to high blood pressure. If this is proven, it has major implications for the prevention of chronic illnesses such as heart disease.

The researchers, in association with the heart and stroke charity Croí, are asking members of the public who have sleep problems to avail of free blood pressure testing on Monday, September 16, from 2-7pm.

Sleep problems could include problems falling asleep or repeated waking during the night.

The tests will take place at the Croí Centre on Moyola Lane in Newcastle, Galway. Some of the people attending may be suitable to be included in this research.

No appointment is necessary and blood pressure will be checked by nurses from NUI Galway and Croí.
