  • A series of short videos, aimed at helping the families of young people affected by mental illness and neurodevelopmental disorders during the current pandemic, have been produced by the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland (CPI).

The series, 'Supporting Families of Young People with Mental Illness During COVID-19', provides coping strategies for families in relation to autism, eating disorders, intellectual disability, depressive illness and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

"In addition to using resources such as these videos and other online supports, families should not hesitate to reach out and ask for support and advice, both in the community and from relevant mental health and other health services," commented Prof Louise Gallagher of St James's Hospital, who provides advice in one of the videos for the families of young people with autism and mental illness.

The CPI also emphasised the importance of people with mental illnesses continuing to engage with their mental health practitioners and services during the current pandemic.

"Treatment and support are still imperative for many, but may be delivered in a different way when necessary to comply with the COVID-19 practises that minimise the spread and damage of the virus," the college noted.

All five videos can be viewed here.
