  • Medical devices that can be used in the home are becoming more complex and the potential for adverse incidents associated with their use ‘is a cause for concern', the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) has said.

A medical device is any product or piece of equipment that a person uses for a medical purpose. Such devices can help to diagnose, monitor or treat health conditions, or can help people with physical impairments to become more independent.

They include wheelchairs, blood glucose metres and blood pressure monitors.

The HPRA has issued a safety notice containing advice on the safe use of these devices in the home. The notice is aimed at users, family members/carers and healthcare professionals.

"There are many medical devices that are used daily in homes throughout Ireland which facilitate treatment and management of care in an out-of-hospital setting. The potential for adverse incidents associated with the use of medical devices in the home due to device malfunction or misuse is a cause for concern and this safety notice aims to highlight key safety and management issues," the HPRA said.

It noted that medical devices have become ‘more complex and sophisticated', and while there are many benefits associated with their use, ‘it is fundamental that good medical device management is adhered to'.

Advice for those using these devices includes:
-Refer to the user manual and follow instructions and training to ensure optimal care
-Be aware of who to contact if the device develops a problem or fails to work
-Ensure that all devices carry the CE mark, which shows it complies with European law
    -Always choose a reputable supplier.

"Medical devices when used correctly contribute to the management and treatment of conditions in the home setting. Effective management and use of medical devices by users, carers or family members is fundamental to ensuring optimum performance and to reducing the potential for harm associated with the use of medical devices in this environment," commented HPRA medical devices product manager, Judith Martin.

People are also reminded that if an adverse incident with a medical device occurs, it should be reported to the HPRA's vigilance section here
