Ireland's population now over 4.9 million

  • Ireland's population is now estimated to be 4,921,500, with just over 45,000 more women than men, figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) have shown.

    The CSO has published Ireland's Facts & Figures 2019, which shows that over 87% of the population are Irish nationals.

    There were 61,016 births registered in 2018, which was 23% lower than 2008, when 75,173 births were registered.

    Jack was the most popular boy's name in 2018, while Emily was the most popular girl's name.

    The top three surnames registered for babies in that year were Murphy, Kelly and Ryan.

    There were 20,389 opposite-sex marriages registered in 2018, along with 664 same-sex marriages.

    Meanwhile, there were 31,116 deaths registered in 2018, with heart disease the leading cause of death in both men and women.
