  • Most people believe that Leo Varadkar will make a better health minister than James Reilly, according to our latest readers' poll.

Leo Varadkar succeeded James Reilly as Health Minister last month and has so far gained some kudos for adopting a more pragmatic and less confused and contradictory approach to sorting out the health service than his predecessor.

He has cold-storaged Dr Reilly's much criticised universal health insurance plan, saying he will concentrate on introducing free GP care for all in the coming years.

Instead of rushing into the UHI system, Leo Varadkar says he will concentrate on getting the new hospital groups up and running and implementing the 'money follows the patient' model of funding first. The new Minister is also delaying the dismantling of the HSE, which was due next year, until these elements are bedded down.

He says he will have to negotiate a realistic budget for the health service in 2015.

We asked readers whether Leo Varadkar be an improvement as Health Minister on James Reilly.

Fifty seven per cent said yes, 24% said no while 19% weren't sure.

Leo says goodbye (and good riddance) to UHI.
