  • The highest number of new cases of HIV in Ireland in 2013 and 2014 was found among men who have sex with men (MSM), the HSE has said.

It has just launched a major new survey of MSM in an attempt to identify the sexual health needs of this population.

"In 2013, men who have sex with men (MSM) accounted for the highest number of new HIV diagnoses in Ireland (46%) and this trend continued into 2014. It is vital that we continue to undertake research in this area, among this population group, to provide the necessary information to drive planning and prevention efforts in Ireland to reverse this trend," commented Dr Derval Igoe of the HSE's Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC).

The survey asks about relationships, sex, including risk behaviours, and the use of health services. It is anonymous, can be completed online and only takes around 15 minutes to fill in.

"We urge as many men as possible to participate in the survey and contribute to the future planning of HIV prevention and sexual health services and promotion. If you are over 18, living in Ireland, and are a man who has sex with other men, then this survey is for you," said Mick Quinlan, manager of the HSE's Gay Men's Health Service.

Meanwhile, according to Susan Donlon of the Dublin AIDS Alliance, up-to-date research in this area is essential.

"With reduced resources, up-to-date research is fundamental in addressing knowledge gaps and informing the development of a strong evidence-base through which HIV prevention and sexual health policy and service delivery can be planned," she pointed out.

The survey is being carried out by MISI 2015, a cross-sectoral partnership of statutory, voluntary and non-governmental organisations working in this specific area, including the HPSC and the Gay Health Network.
