  • Nine new deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in the Republic today, bringing the total number of deaths here to 1,615.

    Thirty-seven new cases of the virus have been confirmed, bringing the total number of cases here to 24,735.

    According to the Department of Health's chief medical officer, Dr Tony Holohan, as of midnight on May 25, a total of 325,795 tests have been carried out.

    "Over the past week, 30,169 tests were carried out and of these, 633 were positive, giving a positivity rate of 2.1%. The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) will meet on Thursday, May 28, where further consideration will be given to broadening the case definition," he commented.

    Data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre shows that of the 24,629 cases reported to it as of midnight on May 24, 3,233 have been hospitalised and of these, 395 have been admitted to ICU.

    Some 7,852 cases are associated with healthcare workers, which is almost 32% of all cases.

    Overall, almost 12,000 cases of the virus have occurred in Dublin, which is 48% of all cases nationwide.

    Meanwhile, no new deaths from COVID-19 were reported in Northern Ireland today, the first time since March that no new daily deaths have been announced.
