One more death from COVID-19 has been confirmed, along with 679 new cases of the virus.

This brings the total number of deaths here to 4,136 and the total number of cases to 215,057.

Of the 679 new cases, 230 occurred in Dublin, 59 in Limerick, 48 in Galway, 47 in Kildare and 29 in Tipperary.

As of 8am on Sunday, there were 744 patients with confirmed COVID-19 in hospital, 148 of whom were in ICU. There had been an additional 45 hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

As of February 18, a total of 326,475 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine had been administered - 205,955 first doses and 120,520 second doses.

According to the Department of Health's deputy chief medical officer, Dr Ronan Glynn, while COVID-19 levels remain very high in our communities, "we are still making progress".

"We have reported less than 1,000 cases each day this week and our seven-day average has fallen from 1,022 two weeks ago, to 862 last week, to 792 today. The number of people in hospital has fallen from over 1,200 two weeks ago, to 744 today.

"Do not underestimate the power of your actions as we seek to protect the gains we have made and further reduce transmission," Dr Glynn commented.

He reminded people to continue to work from home where possible and not to visit other households unless for essential reasons or as part of a support bubble.
