  • Parents are being urged to give their children Christmas presents that will encourage them to be active.

According to the HSE South, children need to undertake at least one hour per day of moderate to vigorous activities, but at least half of Irish children are not achieving this.

It appealed to parents to include items, such as balls, skipping ropes and Frisbees in their gift lists. If children are looking for games consoles, parents should consider opting for those with physical activity accessories, such as dance and fitness games. That way, children can still reach their 60-minute recommendation while playing their video games.

According to HSE South health promotion officer, Claire Deasy, many different reasons are cited as barriers to activities at this time of year, particularly the weather and long, dark nights.

However, she insisted that Christmas is the perfect time to get active.

"Children will be off school and many parents will take time off and plan some family days out. Parks and playgrounds provide a fantastic free option for an active day out. Not only do many contain play areas and walkways, but the open space means that you can bring along that Frisbee and ball too. It will also help you work up a sweat," she said.

She reminded people to use a common sense approach if having an active day out.

"If it's cold wrap up, if it looks like it might rain, bring some raingear/wellies and if the evening draws in, wear some hi-viz gear," she said.

While acknowledging that there are many favourites on TV at this time of year, Ms Deasy also appealed to people not to watch too much television - ideally a maximum of two hours of screen time per day.

"TV viewing and computer use are major contributing factors to our growing sedentary population and consequently lead to increased weight and obesity. You can be active indoors also with family favourites like Twister and musical chairs or simply put on some upbeat festive jingles and get the family dancing."
