  • More than two out of three people believe Health Minister James Reilly has performed poorly since he took up the post three years ago.

In our latest online poll, we asked readers how they rated the Minister's record.

Seventy per cent said it was poor, while 21% said average and five per cent said good.

Only four per cent felt Dr Reilly's record was very good.

However, the Minister has performed better in this latest poll than in our previous poll on his record in August of last year, when 83% said he was performing poorly.

Minister Reilly has been embroiled in a number of controversies since he took office, including rows over the allocation of primary care centres, balancing the HSE budget, failing to keep his promise to abolish prescription charges and over the extension of free GP care and the removal of medical cards from sick and vulnerable people.

He has been criticised over the slow pace and lack of detail in his plans for health reform and over the likely costs of the planned universal health insurance (UHI) scheme.

Minister Reilly has had some successes, including reducing the numbers of public patients waiting for treatment and outpatient appointments, and he has overseen a limited reduction ED trolley numbers. He has also placed a strong emphasis on anti-smoking, alcohol and obesity measures.
