  • Ireland has the second highest rate of measles cases in Europe after Romania, according to latest statistics.

    A report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) shows that in the year November 2011 to October 2012, Ireland had a reported rate of measles cases of 29.2 per million population.

    Only Romania, with a rate of 194 per million, had a higher rate of measles in the same period.

    A total of 141 cases of measles were reported in the year to October 2012 in Ireland, according to the ECDC report.

    The countries with the lowest reported rates include the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Denmark, Norway and Slovakia.

    The UK's current measles rate is 25.2 per million population.

    The ECDC said in Europe as a whole, the number of measles cases in 2012 was substantially lower than in the previous year, and there were no measles-related deaths reported.

    According to the HSE, the current uptake rate in Ireland for the MMR vaccine is 92%. This compares to a rate of 95% in Northern Ireland.
