  • Health Minister James Reilly says he is about to prepare legislation to restrict sunbed use to those over 18.

The Minister told the Dail this week that the planned legislation will also cover the compulsory wearing of protective eyewear, the provision of information on the health risks associated with sunbeds and will prohibit sunbed outlets and retailers from attributing health benefits to sunbed use.

Dr Reilly said it is planned that the sunbed legislation will be brought before the Oireachtas before the end of this year.

There is a growing body of evidence in recent years that the use of sunbeds, especially by children, should be restricted because of the risk of skin cancer and other health problems associated with their use, the Minister said.
