One in seven Irish motorists cannot see properly on our roads and almost a quarter never have an eye test, according to new research.

The study shows more than 14 percent of motorists experience a vision issue when they are driving.

In addition, 22% never get their eyes tested and nearly half claim they only get tested once every five years.

One in seven, or 14% of motorists, admitted to driving without their glasses or contact lenses, despite needing them to drive safely.

A further 12% said they regularly drive despite having an uncorrected vision issue.

More than 85% of those surveyed said that they were in favour of a compulsory eye test for each driving licence renewal.

The study was conducted on more than 400 motorists by Vision Express.
