  • Tributes have been pouring in for US actor, Robin Williams, who has died at the age of 63 from a suspected suicide.

In a statement, his representative said that the actor ‘had been battling severe depression of late'.

"This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time."

Mr Williams was found in his California home after police responded to a call to emergency services. A statement from the assistant chief deputy coroner said that at this time, ‘the Sheriff's Office Coroner Division suspects the death may be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made'.

In a statement from his wife, Susan Schneider, she said that she had lost her husband and best friend, ‘while the world has lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings'.

"I am utterly heartbroken," she added.

Mr Williams, a stand-up comedian and gifted improviser, got his big television breakthrough with the comedy series, Mork and Mindy, which ran from 1978 to 1982.

His breakthrough film role was playing controversial DJ, Adrian Cronauer, in the 1987 film, Good Morning Vietnam. He was nominated for his first Oscar for the film.

He received a second nomination for his performance in the much-loved drama, Dead Poets Society, and a third nomination for his role in The Fisher King. In 1997, he finally won his first and only Oscar - for best supporting actor - playing a psychologist in Good Will Hunting.

Other films he starred in included Mrs Doubtfire, Aladdin, Hook, Night at the Museum, One Hour Photo, Awakenings and The Birdcage.

Mr Williams had battled alcohol and drug problems in the 1970s and 1980s and in 2006, he admitted to drinking again after two decades of sobriety. He had checked himself into rehab for addiction issues just last month.
