  • A terminally ill teenager from Kerry, who had openly appealed to young people not to take their own lives by suicide, has died.

Donal Walsh (16) had been battling cancer for the last four years. Earlier this year, he appeared on a national television chat show to talk about his battle and his feelings regarding young people who take their own lives. This had been prompted by a letter he had written about his situation.

In the letter, he said that he had been ‘given a timeline' on the rest of his life which amounted to just 16 years.

"I realised that I was fighting for my life for the third time in four years and this time I have no hope. Yet still I hear of young people committing suicide and I'm sorry but it makes me feel nothing but anger. I feel angry that these people choose to take their lives, to ruin their families and to leave behind a mess that no one can clean up.

"Yet I am here with no choice, trying as best I can to prepare my family and friends for what's about to come and leave as little a mess as possible," he wrote.

He said that he has ‘no say in this death sentence' and ‘no choice in the pain he is about to cause', adding that he would ‘take any chance at even a few more months on this planet'.

He urged people to appreciate what they have and know that ‘there are always other options and help is always there'.

Just weeks ago, he recorded a video message for school students, after Junior Health Minister, Kathleen Lynch, approached him to take part in an anti-suicide campaign.

He had also raised over €50,000 for charity.

Donal passed away in his home in Blennerville on Sunday, surrounded by his parents and sister.
